UEFA Champions League preview Posted On 31 May 2019

UEFA

Liverpool and Tottenham meet at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on Saturday night in the UEFA Champions League Final.

Both clubs had incredible comebacks to reach the final, with a last minute goal by Lucas Moura putting Tottenham through against Ajax and a stunning 4-0 win by Liverpool in the second-leg semi-final against Barcelona after a 3-0 loss in the first-leg.

It is only the second ever all English final with the only other being when Manchester United beat Chelsea in the 2007-08 season on penalties. The last English team to win the Champions League was Chelsea in the 2011-12 season when they beat Bayern Munich on penalties.

If Liverpool wins it will be their 6th Champions League title and move them up to third in the overall standings, one place ahead of Bayern Munich and Barcelona, and five above the next closest English team, Manchester United who are on 3. Real Madrid top the charts with 13 titles.

The final will be Tottenham’s first ever in the Champions League, as they finally look to break into the upper tier of European football. They have done something very rare in Premier League football in recent years, in sticking with their manager, Mauricio Pochettino and his long term plans. He has assembled a squad of team players from a limited budget, but with a win tomorrow night and their new stadium, a win could be the start of becoming true European giants.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have an expensively assembled squad with a proven manager looking to bring glory back to Merseyside after being in the wilderness and on the fringes for so long. It’s not quite a David vs. Goliath situation, however. Liverpool are the favourites and rightly so with last year’s PFA player of the year, Mo Salah leading the line, and this year’s PFA player of the year, Virgil Van Dijk starring at the back.

Previewing the Champions League Final itself, Liverpool have a fully fit squad and are expected to line up with their usual three forwards of Salah, Sane and Firmino who have 68 goals and 25 assists between them this season. With Alisson in goal and Van Dijk at centreback, they have conceded just 20 goals, the least amount of goals of any team in the Premier League this season. Tottenham conceded 39.

Tottenham’s talisman, Harry Kane has been selected in the matchday squad, however, there is still a doubt that he will be fit to start. If Kane does start, expect Moura, the semi-final hattrick hero to, rather unfairly, drop back to the bench. Their weak link this season has been Trippier at right back, who will surely be targeted by Jurgen Klopp’s wingers during the game. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has been to know to drop some clangers in big games and Tottenham fans will hope he is fully focused come Saturday evening.

Key Players:

Tottenham: Son Heung-min

Liverpool: Sadio Mane

Predicted Score: 2:1 Liverpool.

You can watch the game live for FREE on the BT Sport app, at Btsport.com and on their BT Sport YouTube channel at 6pm this Saturday.
